002: Mary Poppins walked so Jane Birkin could run.
Oversized bags and how they marry style with practicality.
The oversized bag has taken over and with all the post-covid baggage we are carrying (can we still use covid as an excuse?), it has won my affection. The large bag to me signifies the modern person who won’t compromise in life and therefore, won’t compromise with what they leave the house with. The space allows you to carry anything and everything you need, less hoarder and more Jane Birkin-esque. Fantasy book of the week? Check! Vintage camera you never use? In there! 5 different but ultimately similar lipliner shades? Got it!
It is style without compromise. That is, compromise in practicality. You can carry as much as you need without sacrificing the quality of your outfit. I also love the distinct point of view carrying a large bag provides, whether that be with its texture or its structural makeup. And ultimately, emotionally, it satisfies my inner child’s longing to one day own a Mary Poppins bag to fill with the quirky needs of my being.
I have found that oversized bags fall into two main categories, depending on the message they are telling. The first is the structured bag which isn’t afraid to take up space or make itself seen. The rigid structure and large shape ensure that it makes a statement and brings a strong point of view to an outfit. Alternatively, there is the more floppy, malleable oversized bag. It has the power to ground a more structured outfit or provide an injection of materiality to a barely-there outfit.
W78st Super Bloom Cloud Bag
I was immediately drawn to the floral decal details on the WT8st bag, bringing a brooch effect which adds personality to the item. I love how it is soft, with it being a cloud bag, but structured, adding a smartness to your outfit without taking itself too seriously. The juxtaposition of a large bag paired with a tiny dress brings a sense of humour to an outfit. This pairing makes for a flattering summer fit whilst keeping you armed with the sweltering summer essentials. The bag is large enough to fit your SPF/water bottle/hat/fan/portable AC/deodorant without taking away from the style of your outfit. This is a look that, whilst stylish, can easily be seen on the streets of a cosmopolitan city—the large bag providing an enhanced utility value.
Yuzefi Fortune Cookie Bag

This Yuzefi bag is a bag you carry with the same affection you would an infant. Its malleable nature allows you to hold it under your arms, giving you an effortless look even if you are carrying the weight of a newborn in the bag. Aptly named the fortune cookie bag, the silhouette of this bag allows for style and substance. The dip at the top of the bag gives you room for larger sleeves in the winter, rewarding you with a unique silhouette without compromising the layering needed during the colder months. The adjustable strap allows you to customise where it sits on your body, giving you the ability to seamlessly transition from day to night by shortening the strap when you grab a drink with friends. The studded detail of the one I chose for the look is my favourite, adding a subtle elevation to the bag and a slight jewellery component to otherwise simple outfits.
Gabriel for Sach Pina Bag
This Gabriel for Sach bag works due to the strap folding over, giving you the versatility of a shoulder bag or a clutch. Honestly, straps are out. Carrying a big bag like a small clutch is so baby girl, very Jacob Elordi sitting down on a couch. This is a bag you throw on without thinking, trusting the quality of the piece to add to your outfit. Simple in its design, it allows you to use it in both everyday and special scenarios, giving you more bang for your buck. The chocolate brown is my favourite, as the colour works with any neutral colour you can think of, whilst still standing out in an outfit.
I hope I have convincingly made my case for the oversized bag. Speak to you next week!
