The irony of this newsletter is that there are no white options discussed below. To me, winter whites signify a brightness in one’s wardrobe during the dark months of November-February. Instead of leaning into the seasonal depression and holding on to the shadow of warm summer days, this year I am determined to inject my winter days with lightness in the form of the colour palette I will be adopting this winter season.
While analysing the ecosystem of my wardrobe, I realised there was a lack of diversity in the colours I wore. I was lost in a sea of blacks, navys, and greys and wanted to break out of this habit. Since then, I have been embarking on this journey towards getting out of my colour comfort zone to allow myself to expand my styling repertoire and be more inspired when getting dressed. There is no reason to replicate the mundanity of the weather. This is the time to take one's power back and inject colour into the process of getting dressed this upcoming season.
My bible throughout this process has been the Tibi colour wheel. The colour wheel effectively communicates how to mix neutrals with more nuance in order to achieve a more creative and dynamic look. I am particularly inspired by Ring 3, which shows colours we are used to with a bit of edge. Whether that is a brown-ish grey, a blue-toned green, or a green-ish brown, these colours allow one to expand their thinking when it comes to defining a neutral item, allowing for more interesting outfit choices.
This outfit is in a similar colour family, with a green undertone throughout, but with a more nuanced approach, it makes for a less obvious colour pairing. The green undertone of the Cos cashmere sweater perfectly complements the khaki jeans to create an all-neutral outfit with increased dimension. The cream shoes prove a contrast, which keeps the outfit neutral but lightens the overall look for a winter look without the blues of the season.
This standard Heather grey polo paired with the more nuanced brown-ish grey short introduces a different air to this all-grey outfit. A simple change in undertone elevates this look and adds a visual depth you wouldn’t have achieved with a simple grey short. This brown undertone is emphasised with the brown knee-high boots, and the dark khaki clutch provides a complementary colour that adds more dimension overall.
Both of these outfits hit the goal of expanding on the shades and hues of my clothing and adding more to the conversation of my outfits, without completely going to the deep end with colour. Approaching getting dressed with this new-found wonder makes the teeth-chattering days ahead of us a lot more bearable.
