One of my most recent purchases inspired a rethinking of my approach to my wardrobe. It influenced me to think beyond the confines of my own making and make more ‘experimental’ choices when shopping for new items. That purchase was the belted patch-pocket & Other Stories jacket.
I was in the market for a light jacket to carry me through the winter-lite months and was originally considering a blazer. I was drawn to the smartness of a blazer and how it polishes any outfit. However, I quickly realised that this wouldn’t add anything to the overall conversation of my wardrobe. I have a lot of classic pieces—denim jackets and tailored trousers—so a lot of my items fit the brief. I realised that a blazer wouldn’t have necessarily made a ripple in my wardrobe or inspired any variation overall. This realisation led to me pulling the trigger with the & Other Stories jacket, which is still in line with the classic look but provides a more distinct approach.
On first glance, this jacket looks completely different from a blazer, but the similarities are in the details of both pieces. A blazer is tailored with its collar and structured silhouette which this jacket mirrors, but the intricacies are what bring more to the conversation. The oversized silhouette and pockets, the buckle belt at the waist, the shoulder epaulettes, and the light neutral colour make this jacket more of a talking piece. It's an item that complements the rest of my wardrobe while pushing beyond the most obvious styling choice.
As you can see with both outfits, the jacket smartens up the casual jeans and hat while not being the typical blazer option. It is an unexpected take on a smarter piece, with it having different approach to the word. This has inspired me to not always default to my initial instinct and to try and think beyond the immediate definition of my style words. This way I can bring a more coloured approach to my style and have a wardrobe with many more players.
Hope you all have a lovely week and speak to you soon :)
