I am tired of the bad PR coats get in the winter. The idea that a coat ruins your outfit needs to disappear because, in winter, a good coat is the outfit. Winter dressing involves an extra layer—literally and figuratively. You need thermal clothing underneath your clothes to achieve both fashion and function. Unless you choose a more technical, down-filled coat, layering thermal pieces keeps you warm while wearing a quality coat. You don’t have to sacrifice your sense of style to the winter gods. This newsletter will show you how.
When buying a coat, consider both functionality and the feeling it gives you when worn. Do you lean toward dramatic looks in your outfits? Do you prefer classic pieces? Is texture a top priority? Thinking about these factors will help you approach your coat purchase with a less prescriptive approach, allowing you to infuse your personal style into the process.
Below are some of my most worn coats and the unique qualities each one brings to my wardrobe, showing the kaleidoscope of possibilities a good coat can offer.
This Jil Sander coat stole my heart with its exaggerated silhouette, which adds a touch of whimsy to my outfits. The oversized balloon sleeves and funnel neck give it a theatrical feel, but its black wool fabric makes it easy to pair with other pieces, grounding the coat in everyday wearability. The shorter A-line silhouette makes it more versatile than a long-line coat, making it perfect for daily wear.
The magic of this coat speaks for itself. With shearling and embroidered details, it’s one of the most unique pieces in my collection. This coat is a constant compliment magnet and one of the most fun pieces I own. My winter wardrobe typically consists of the same basic pieces—a pair of jeans or trousers and a knit—so this coat adds a burst of excitement to my outfits, even on the darkest days.
This Frankie Shop fur bomber (similar here) is the perfect love child between casual and glamorous. Its oversized silhouette and luxurious fur texture make it ideal for days when I want an elevated casual look. This coat fits my style perfectly since I often aim for elevated casual outfits, and it's by far the most worn coat in my collection. The deep chocolate brown complements my mostly navy and black wardrobe, adding the richness and depth a winter wardrobe needs.
This Noyoco coat is the newest addition to my collection but has already become a staple. Its tailored, long-line silhouette is a timeless classic, but the cinched waist adds a modern twist. This coat is the elevated basic I crave when getting dressed, offering a classic look with a touch of edge. Another bonus is that it’s made from 100% recycled cashmere and wool, which means I won’t need to replace it anytime soon—it’s built to last.
Coats come in all shapes and sizes, and like Goldilocks, it’s all about finding the one that’s just right—not too hot, not too cold.
Have a lovely week :)

I LOVE a good coat! I told my husband recently "don't ever let me get rid of any of my coats because I know I'll always want them even if I don't like it right now."
Can I hear about where the jeans you are wearing are from!?
I love the long black coat!
