The festive season is a time to dream. As the December wind carries the scent of hot chocolate and the sound of Michael Bublé fills the air, strolling through the city always sparks my imagination. The holidays inspire me to infuse a bit of magic into my clothing choices. Christmas and New Years offer the perfect opportunity to experiment with outfits, embracing the festive grandeur in our wardrobes. I want to create looks that we can wear while making cherished memories with our loved ones in the warming glow of the season.
To explore what’s on offer this year, I visited the high street to find pieces that would spark that sense of holiday magic. I focused on one question: What would I want to wear on Christmas Day or wake up in on New Year’s Day? I was after sparkle and grandeur, but I also wanted pieces with nuance and depth. Rather than reaching for every red item in sight, I sought intentional, standout pieces for this newsletter. Without further ado, here are my favourite festive finds on the high street.
Reformation
As soon as I walked into Reformation, I was drawn to the beauty of a toffee-coloured maxi sequin skirt. I had to try it on. Given the heavy texture of the Gabriella skirt, I decided to pair it with two contrasting textures, creating a "texture sandwich." The first outfit features the Sutton top from Reformation, which makes a perfect Christmas Day look. I love how the top balances the skirt’s glamour with its mock neckline and herringbone fabric, making it more daytime-appropriate. The second outfit transitions the skirt from day to night with the Adriano top from Reformation. This look is perfect for New Year’s Eve, where you can turn up the heat and opt for a sultrier vibe, free from the family’s watchful eyes. Pair it with a coloured bra for the ultimate champagne-sipping, dancing-all-night look.
& Other Stories
Next, I stopped by & Other Stories, where I discovered an adorable mint green, brushed knit set. I was drawn to how the green wasn’t the typical forest shade we associate with the holidays; its subtlety offers a refreshing twist on festive dressing. The brushed wool texture feels wonderfully Grinch-esque, which makes it perfect for the occasion. Since the outfit is more minimalist in its festive approach, accessories become key. I would add a sculptural brooch or chandelier earrings to make a statement. A touch of sparkle in your jewellery will complete the look, making it perfect for Christmas dinner.
Arket
This dress from Arket is a more traditional take on festive dressing, but it won me over with its simple yet striking details. The one-shoulder design with twisted drape detailing and the A-line silhouette create a princess-like effect that feels perfectly at home during the holidays. Its understated grandeur allows for minimalist accessorising—a red lip and diamond earrings are all you need to elevate the look. An added bonus: This dress transitions seamlessly into the rest of the year, offering lasting value far beyond December and January.
I love any excuse to indulge in a little fantasy when getting dressed, and the holiday season provides the perfect opportunity. Getting through the year—especially this one—has been no small feat, so why not go into 2025 with a bang? Sometimes, something as simple as a well-chosen outfit can make all the difference.
