064: Exploring Liberty
An overdue exploration of one of London’s most iconic fashion destinations
It feels almost sacrilegious to admit this, but I’ve never properly explored the women’s department at Liberty—cue the gasps. I’ve passively walked through the ground floor a handful of times, but the urge to venture beyond that never really struck me. As someone who has lived in London for years and identifies as a fashion lover, it felt nearly sinful to keep ignoring it. So this week, I decided it was time to rectify that.
My curiosity was originally sparked when I learned that Liberty carried Liberowe in-store. I mentioned the brand in my One Night in Paris post, specifically highlighting their outerwear for its expert tailoring and elevated details. I was immediately drawn to the Raja tweed jacket. I’ve been on the hunt for a tweed jacket for a while, and this seemed like the perfect reference point.
I loved the mid-length cut and the Nehru collar, which is a signature of the brand. The tailoring felt traditional and classic, while the length and collar added a more modern edge. It didn’t come across as stuffy or dated, which tweed jackets often can. Instead, it struck the right balance of sophistication and contemporary style. It quickly made its way onto my wishlist and served as a great starting point for my tweed jacket search.
Next, I explored Liberty’s Toteme selection—a brand that’s often talked about but hasn’t quite captured my attention until now. Once again, the outerwear stood out, offering a wide range of styles that felt aligned with my many style moods and personalities.
The first piece that caught my eye was an incredible suit jacket with a mandarin collar. Like the Liberowe jacket, it blended classic and modern elements beautifully. The neckline especially stood out, steering it away from the traditional, slightly stuffy blazer feel, and into something more versatile. Its clean lines and modern tailoring allow it to pair effortlessly with more casual pieces, helping to avoid that disjointed “officewear outside the office” effect. If you’re into blazers but want to avoid looking like a boss baby, this one’s a wardrobe essential.
I also tried on Toteme’s famous country jacket and immediately felt an urge to buy a Defender and retreat to a countryside farm. This is exactly the sort of jacket a city girl with a soft spot for the country would wear. The colour was spot-on. It’s the ideal spring jacket to throw on for a woodland walk, the scent of burning wood in the air and the risk of hayfever totally worth it for the views.
Lastly, I fell in love with a hooded jacket from Cecile Bahnsen. As someone living in the UK, water-repellent clothing is a necessity for at least nine months of the year, so finding something that blends function and fashion so well felt like a dream. The cropped silhouette paired with a (sadly not pictured) classic dress shirt collar aligns perfectly with my style philosophy of effortless elegance—where the piece does all the talking. It would be ideal for autumn or early spring, whether you’re running errands, heading to a workout class, or grabbing lunch with a friend.
This initial visit to Liberty’s women’s department was more inspiring than I expected, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the depth of their offering—especially in outerwear. It felt like opening a door I hadn’t realised was closed all this time. That said, I barely scratched the surface. I discovered, somewhat embarrassingly, that there are multiple women’s floors and extra rooms I didn’t even get the chance to explore. So, I’ll be continuing my exploration of this landmark department store in next week’s post. There’s much more to uncover, and I’m excited to see what else awaits.
Hope you all have a great rest of your week and speak soon :)
