072: Thoughtful Treasures from Portugal
What Portugal taught me about quality, patience, and good taste
I spent five days in Portugal last week, and I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by the country. What struck me most was the feeling of authenticity that ran through every aspect of life there, especially in the quality of the things they make and share. From the incredible seafood (cue the many codfish cakes devoured) to the local craftsmanship found in leather gloves, artisanal soaps and more, Portugal felt like a place where nothing is rushed and everything is considered.
It’s a country where simplicity is valued, where quality and intentionality guide the way people consume. Being there reminded me that the best things aren’t necessarily the most expensive or abundant. They’re the most useful, beautiful, and thoughtfully made. It made me nostalgic for a time when what you owned was chosen with care, meant to last, and carried real meaning rather than just convenience.
That energy shaped the few things I brought home with me. Each item is simple, durable, and deeply specific to the experience. Here's what I got and why.
Luvaria Ulisses Lambskin Leather Gloves: I came across this heritage glove shop in Lisbon that has been around since the 1920s and decided to treat myself to a pair for winter. I was drawn in by the wall of colours and styles, and by how the shop assistant took one look at my hands and immediately knew my glove size. I went for navy — safe, stylish, and unlikely to clash with anything I own. I already know I’ll be insufferable the moment the weather drops below 15°C.
Porto Souvenir Baby Tee: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: few things rival a good graphic tee. I wanted something with a baby tee silhouette and after ransacking the age 10–12 section of nearly every tourist shop (no shame), I struck gold in a tiny store in Porto. It’s a thin 100% cotton tee with a navy blue graphic that hits just above the hips. It layers well and adds the right amount of nostalgia to any outfit.
Teal Croc-Effect Leather Card Holder: On our final day in the Lisbon, we came across a pop-up market showcasing local artisans. At a leather goods stall, I spotted a teal croc-embossed card holder that immediately caught my eye. I’d been meaning to replace my old one, which had finally disintegrated after years of loyal service. Normally, I’d have panic-bought the first half-decent option, but I’d held off — and for once, patience paid off. This one is even better, with a more interesting design, longer lifespan, and a more affordable price. There was something powerful in exercising patience and letting the right item find me, instead of giving in to the usual urgency. I will (try) to continue this practice moving forward.
Portugal Cap: If you’ve been reading Moresque for a while, you’ll know I’m drawn to a good cap. I don’t own many beige pieces, but this one stood out to me. It has a warm mustard undertone and dark brown embroidery, with white stitched patterns running across the cap that add a subtle but striking touch. It felt too special to leave behind and has quickly become a standout in my collection.
Benamôr Hand Cream: During my last solo hour in the Lisbon, I wandered into A Vida Portuguesa, a beautiful concept store that celebrates Portuguese design. From clothing to stationery, the entire space was thoughtful and inspiring. Because I was travelling with just a carry-on, I chose something small but lovely: a Benamôr hand cream. I wash my hands constantly, so I always carry one with me. This scent is especially addictive with notes of mandarin, lemon, amber, and vanilla. It’s fresh but has depth, and I’m already wishing I had picked up more than one.
Each of these things shares something in common. They aren’t flashy, but they’re full of care — in how they were made, how they fit into my life, and how they make me feel. Portugal reminded me that consumption doesn’t have to be excessive to be fulfilling. Often, it’s the thoughtful, intentional choices that stay with us the longest.

Portuguese here and loved this post so much! Luvaria Ulisses and Benamôr are really special (their Principe Real store is to die for!)
Those gloves 👌🏻 such a find, Morenike. I’m soon heading to Greece, where, I have a feeling, things are not rushed in either and quality over quantity is in their blood
